An Operating System provides an environment to execute programs, by providing certain services to the users and programs for the convenience of the programmers. Some of the important services provided for the users are as follows:

- File System Manipulation
- Communications
- Error Detections
Another set of services, which are not helpful to the users directly, but ensures efficient operations of the Operating System are as follows:
- Resource Allocation
- Accounting
- Protection and Security
